Young Rail Professionals (YRP), founded in 2009, is a leading network for early-career professionals in rail. Through its mission to promote the rail industry as a rewarding career, inspire the next generation of talent, and develop young professionals to reach their full potential, YRP continues to shape the future of the sector.

Operating through regional committees across the UK and Ireland, YRP offers a diverse programme of events, outreach initiatives, and national campaigns that connect, support, and empower individuals working in - or aspiring to join - the rail industry.

Membership is free for all, with a focus on students and professionals with up to ten years of rail industry experience. YRP collaborates closely with sponsors, corporate partners, and industry bodies to build a more diverse, connected, and inclusive rail workforce.

“Rail is one of the most dynamic industries for young professionals today,” said Bonnie Price, Chief Executive Officer of YRP. “At YRP, we provide platforms where emerging talents can connect, learn, and lead. Whether you’re just entering the industry or have a few years of experience, YRP is here to support your growth.”

Expanding Horizons Through Key Initiatives

In the 2024/2025 financial year, YRP delivered 39 events across the country, many of which were part of its flagship annual campaign, Rail Week. This nationwide celebration showcases the rail sector’s diversity and innovation through school outreach, site visits, technical seminars, and networking events. Designed to open doors for the next generation, Rail Week has become a vital platform for visibility and engagement across the industry.

Politics in Rail

Traditionally held in London, YRP expanded its Politics in Rail series in 2024 to reach regional audiences across the UK. These events foster important conversations about transport policy and the future of rail infrastructure, helping young professionals better understand and influence the political landscape.

A standout session was held at the National Railway Museum in York, featuring speakers such as Andrew Dixon, Head of High-Speed Rail at Manchester City Council; Rob Warnes, Strategic Development Director at Northern; Robin Groth, former Deputy Director of International and Safety at the Department for Transport; and Julie Carrier, Chief Commercial Officer, UK & Europe at Unipart Rail.

Young Rail Tours

In March 2025, YRP led a delegation of members to Paris for the latest Young Rail Tour, an international study trip offering an immersive experience into France’s world-leading transport systems. Attendees visited major sites including SNCF’s headquarters and the Paris Metro operations centre, gaining insights into urban mobility, high-speed rail development, and cross-border collaboration. These tours offer invaluable professional development opportunities while building lasting connections with peers across Europe.

Into Rail

Into Rail is YRP’s flagship early careers outreach programme, designed to introduce students and career changers to the wide range of opportunities available in rail. Through school talks, careers fairs, and mentoring initiatives, Into Rail demystifies the industry and showcases real stories of people building impactful careers. With a growing network of volunteers, Into Rail is helping shape a future pipeline of passionate and informed young professionals.

Heritage Engagement

YRP’s partnerships with heritage railways across the UK and Ireland continue to thrive, offering hands-on experiences that connect today’s young professionals with the industry’s storied past. Our members have contributed significantly through volunteering - dedicating 1,000 hours in 2022/2023 and increasing that commitment to 1,400 hours in 2024/2025, with expectations to go even further in 2025/2026. These activities include restoration projects, operational support, and on-site engagement, helping members develop practical skills while playing a key role in preserving Britain’s railway legacy.

Celebrating Community and Achievement

YRP’s annual events calendar is anchored by the Annual Dinner, a prestigious industry gathering that celebrates the achievements of young professionals across the sector. The most recent dinner, held in Cardiff in March 2025, welcomed over 400 attendees, including industry leaders, members, and partners. The evening featured keynote speeches, awards recognising excellence, and vibrant networking opportunities - all reflecting YRP’s commitment to building a thriving professional community for the future of rail.
