The Wayside Digitalisation Forum (WDF) will take place in Vienna from 15 to 17 October 2025. In this interview, programme director and initiator Christian Pucher talks about the history, the new concept and the highlights of this international industry gathering.
Mr Pucher, what can participants expect at the WDF 2025 in Vienna?
We have put together a varied programme covering the most important current topics relating to digitalisation on the track. Visitors can look forward to over 20 technical presentations by speakers from more than 10 countries, inspiring keynotes and practical case studies. I would particularly like to highlight the panel discussions, in which we will examine the perspectives of both the industry and operators. In addition, the WDF offers excellent networking opportunities with around 300 international experts from the signalling technology industry.
How did the idea for the WDF originally come about?
The idea arose from the need to create a neutral platform for professional exchange in the field of signalling technology and axle counting. In 2011, we initiated such a conference with the Wheel Detection Forum. The focus of the presentations was on the optimal integration of wheel detection and axle counting solutions into interlockings and on the project-specific configuration of different applications. From the outset, the WDF differed from other events in its clear focus on specific expert topics and practical content – the direct transfer of knowledge and the exchange of experiences are at the forefront here.
The current format is based on the well-known ‘Wheel Detection Forum’. What prompted you to realign the event after a few years’ break?
After the last edition in 2019, we noticed continued strong interest from the industry – both from operators and from the manufacturing sector. The opportunities to exchange experiences, present and discuss their own projects and developments were always particularly appreciated. However, the requirements in the railway sector have changed significantly in recent years. Digitalisation is bringing new technologies and innovative approaches. This also necessitates the efficient and future-proof integration and migration of systems. This constellation has motivated us to further develop the forum. We have retained the clear focus on signalling technology and track-side components. However, the range of topics covered by the Wayside Digitalisation Forum has broadened in line with the challenges that the global railway industry faces today. Accordingly, the presentations at WDF 2025 will also address topics supported by increasing digitalisation. These include intelligent solutions for controlling all track-side objects, initiatives for the standardisation of interfaces, such as EULYNX, cyber security and innovative predictive maintenance approaches.
Are there any special innovations at WDF this year?
Yes, we have significantly expanded the event format. Firstly, there is a larger exhibition area, which offers companies and sponsors more space to present their innovations – interested parties are still welcome to get in touch. Secondly, we have integrated panel discussions into the programme to bring together different perspectives from industry and operational practice. This will create an even more lively discussion platform for the industry.
What are you personally looking forward to most at WDF 2025?
I am particularly looking forward to the inspiring presentations and lively discussions on the panels. But networking is also a highlight for me – the direct exchange with colleagues from all over the world is always enriching. We are therefore once again giving this aspect a lot of space at the WDF, in the form of regular breaks between sessions as well as various side events. It’s exciting to see how the industry is developing together and finding new solutions to the challenges of digitalisation.
